Wall construction, Longfellow Garden, Portland, 1934
Contributed by Longfellow Garden ClubDescription
In 1924, the Longfellow Garden Club began restoring and maintaining the gardens surrounding the Wadsworth-Longfellow house on Congress Street in Portland.
In 1934, they had a lattice wall, backed with heavy wire, put up on the west (Brown Street) side of the property to screen the house from nearby tenements. The group planted wisteria along the lattice.
Anne Longfellow Pierce left the house to the Maine Historical Society when she died in 1901. It had been the home of her grandparents, Peleg and Elizabeth Wadsworth, and her parents, Stephen and Zilpah Wadsworth Longfellow.
It became a historic house museum, with the Maine Historical Society headquarters built on the site.
