Description

Pearl Wing of Portland spurred the formation of the Longfellow Garden Club in 1924 in an effort to restore and maintain the gardens surrounding the Wadsworth-Longfellow house in Portland.

The brick wall along the western, Brown Street, side of the garden helped block the garden from surrounding buildings.

Peleg Wadsworth built the house in 1785 and he and his wife, Elizabeth, raised their family there. Their daughter Zilpah and her husband Stephen Longfellow and their children occupied the house after the Wadsworths moved to Hiram.

Anne Wadsworth Longfellow, daughter of Stephen and Zilpah, gave the house to Maine Historical Society after her death in 1901.
