Description

This hand-painted lantern slide shows the Children's Gate between the Wadsworth-Longfellow house and the Maine Historical Society headquarters in Portland in about 1930.

Alexander Wadsworth Longfellow Jr., who designed the Maine Historical Society building, also designed the gate, which enclosed the garden and protected it. Students from the woodworking department of Deering High School built the gate and installed it.

The gate was removed in the 1960s because it had deteriorated, but was replaced in 2012.

Gladys Pratt of the American Museum of Natural History in New York hand painted this lantern slide that the Longfellow Garden Club used in presentations.
