Description

Gladys Pratt, lantern slide colorist at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, hand painted a lantern slide that shows the fountain in Longfellow Garden in Portland as it was in the late 1930s.

The fountain was added when the wall between the garden and the properties along Brown Street was rebuilt.

The garden is part of the Wadsworth-Longfellow House, the childhood home of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. His sister Anne Longfellow Pierce donated the house to the Maine Historical Society in 1901 and the Longfellow Garden Club began maintaining the garden in 1924.
